Temptation & Prayer
Many religions, traditions, and denominations today
run to verses like in the four Gospels to captivate
the
listeners and to lock
them into the
IF..THEN practices.
Systems of
works. Systems of tracking
ones
performance.
I am not saying
ignore the Lords
words, but pay
attention
to the fact that
it was in
His
time on earth, not
after
He asscended
into
Heaven. What He spoke, He spoke
to
the
Jews.
Them who
where under the Law.
They were not under
Grace! We, the
members of the Body
of Christ, are
right
now
under
Grace. We are in
the
age of Grace.
But still
there is
this
flesh to
deal with. So, lets
take a
run
through some verses
dealing with
temptation.
Matthew 6:13
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. Many teach that we must pray for deliverence from temptation. And we should
pray! We are to always
pray! We are to pray without
ceasing. But Matthew 6:13
is
directed to the Jews for them
to see
their
deliverence
and the coming
of
the earthly
Kingdom. It did not
happen yet!
Right?
Now lets go
on.
Matthew 26:41
Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Here is yet another good one for a model, but most use it to still keep you
in a system of works. Just
simply listen to what Christ
is saying. "Watch and pray". We
are to always watch
and pray about
all
things! Pray that you enter into
temptation is another good one. The Lord
goes on to point
out why
we
should do this..."the
spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is
weak.".
See that thing? He is
telling
an earthly
people who are
waiting for an earthly kingdom something
about their flesh. He is
giving
really good advice.
Advice
that should not be ignored! But it is still
a modle
for us. We are not
under
the Law, but under Grace. Do
not forget
that! I am not
discounting what our Lord said. We need to
go
on.
1 Corinthians 10:13
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.The Apostle Paul, who was given everything by revelation, even points out
this weakness that is in
our flesh, but goes on to
point
out the obvious
eliment..."There hath
no temptation taken you but such
as is common to
man". You see, we still are in
fleshly bodies,
like the Jews.
Though under Grace, still
we must keep our
guard on.
Even when we are not
faithful, there is one who
is
faithful to us!
"God is
faithful, who
will not
suffer you
to be tempted
above that
ye are
able". We can say yes.
We can
say
no.
We are not trapped without any hope. We must rest
in His Grace!
Galatians 4:14
And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.Even our own Apostle had problems with his own flesh. And the Galatians saw
it. They did not hate him
for it or reject him. We are
to be the same with
each other. We
are not to go on without compassion for
each other. We
are to pray for each
other.
1 Timothy
6:9 But they that
will be rich
fall into temptation
and a snare, and into
many foolish and hurtful lusts, which
drown men in
destruction
and
perdition.
Here is one for the wealth and prosperity croud today to listen to! Those who
have much riches will be
trapped by their
own riches. This will lead to
trouble and dispare, if
that is all
their lives revolve around.
Again...prayer
is the
solution.
Galatians 6:1
Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Here is yet another one that gets very much overlooked by the teachings of
today.
Talk is cheap.
They will
quote this verse, but
lack the
ability to practice
it!
Restoration
of fallen members of
the
Body
of Christ must be done
gently
and
with prayer!
If we fail
to head this
verse, we can be
overtaken in
a fault too! We all still walk around in
flesh here!
Prayer is key
here!
James 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
Now I am not running back to the law for any reason, as to put us back under
it. You may say Law?
The Book of James is for those in
the Ages to come, which is after the dispensation of the
Grace of
God. We are
currently
under Grace! However
James does a
good job
in
pointing
out how all of our
temptations
work. And that is to
us! Yes I said us!
How can
I say us?
James points out
"But
every
man is
tempted",
and
that
would
include us! How does
this temptation
work? "when he
is
drawn
away
of his own lust, and
enticed." So what is the point
here? Again...prayer is key!
Colossians 2:10
And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:Now, one thing to point out here thus far. Even though we must deal with
these fleshly bodies, we
must not, and can not forget
that... "ye are complete in
him".
"Ye" is all the
members
of the
Body
of
Christ, and "Him"
is
Christ. So
where is our victory?
IN CHRIST! Who
did all the work that
we
could
never do? CHRIST DID! Who paid for all of our
sins? CHRIST DID! But...we are to pray
without
ceasing!
Colossians 4:12 Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.
So do you want proof that we are to pray for each other? Paul points it out
in Colossians 4:12!"always
labouring fervently for
you in
prayers". Now this is the labours of one for the
whole Body of Christ.What
is key here? Why does
Epaphras labor in prayers?
What does
the Body benefit from
this? "that ye
may
stand
perfect
and complete
in all the will of
God". You
see it? Prayer! That
is the key. We
are
to labor
in prayer for each
other! Why? Pray without
ceasing!
"that ye
may
stand
perfect
and complete
in all the
will of
God".
Phillippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
Now on to a verse. Contrast it with Matthew 26:41. It is our verse
for prayer.
Christ told the Jews to
WATCH AND PRAY.
Right? Paul,
our
Apostle, who was
taught of
Christ,
tells us, the
members of
the
the
Body of Christ,
to "Be
careful
for
nothing". Kind of sounds like WATCH AND PRAY don't
it? We
are
to always be careful
in all
things
so we are not setup
for any temptations. In our walk and in
our practice.
Why? "but in every
thing by prayer and
supplication
with thanksgiving
let your
requests
be
made known
unto
God" So
what is the point?
Pray!
1 Timothy 2:1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
And Paul asks of us, the members of the Body of Christ, to Pray, and
interceed, and to give thanks. If that
is not a pattern
after the Lord Jesus Christ, I do
not know what is!
But who is the
prayers, and the
intercessions,
and
the giving of
thanks for?
"first of all,
supplications, prayers,
intercessions, and giving of
thanks, be made for
all
men". Why? We are to
win
all
to Christ. We are
to point all
to
Christ. We are to pray, and not mermer and to
complain
over our leaders. Why?
That we may
lead peacful lives. We
are to simply
Pray. Think about
this!
If we
do
all of this
praying all of
the time,
everyday, it will
occupy so much of our time that
it can get in
the way of
our
temptations!
WE ARE NOT TO, "Get COUNSELING, that ye enter not into
temptation."
WE ARE NOT TO, "Go see the
psychiatrist, that ye enter not
into
temptation."
WE ARE NOT TO, "Go see the pastor,
that ye enter not
into
temptation."
WE ARE TO...Pary without ceasing!
As members of the Body of Christ we are to always pray! We are in the age of
Grace. We do not
have to work. Christ did it all for
us. He defeated the
Devil when He
rose from the dead on
the
third
day. We are simply to
give
ourselves
over to
prayer.
That is why religion, tradition, and denominationalism is ruling over us
today! We are saints! We
are a new creature in Christ.
Lack of prayer on our
parts will
lead to...
1. All of our prayers are
prayer-sins.
2. All of our
mistakes are prayer-mistakes.
3.
All of our failures are prayer-failures.
4. When we fail to pray, we
simply FAIL!
Prayer is one of our weapons.
When
temptation comes, and it
will
as long
as we live in these
bodys
of
flesh and bone,
we are
to pray
then! Not
like the
major
denominationalists
teach, but
if we fail
do do our
part
as
members of the Body of
Christ, we
will fail and
fall
flat
on
our faces every single
time.
We
must abide in the Grace
that
God has
provided for
us!
Even Paul,
our own Apostle
knew
this...
2 Corinthians 12:9
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.Colossians 4:2
Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving; We are not to try on our own. We will fail if we do! We are to be careful for nothing, and we are to pray!
Phillippians 4:6
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.Elder Scott Ray
